An Injury to One Is an Injury to All

Statement of the GEB & GDC on Charlottesville

Editor’s note: This statement was released last night by the GEB and GDC. I have copied it here for ease of consumption.

The IWW and its General Defense Committee wish to extend our hearts, minds and bodies to the work of supporting those families and comrades assaulted by the fascist right-wing in Charlottesville, Virginia this past Saturday, August 12, 2017

The IWW and the GDC stand in opposition to threats facing the working class, and whole-heartedly reaffirm our support for the comrades on the front lines.

On August 12, 2017, family members of all ages, union folk, socialists,

communists, anarchists and regular everyday people came together as a united front to stop the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville. These folks fight for life, dignity and a better world. The far right & fascists, on the other hand, cowardly and weak as they are, made various attacks and assaults on peaceful protesters.

Early in the morning one of their lot drove a vehicle at high speed into a crowded group, many of which were our fellow workers. This individual was not a solo actor, but the logical manifestation of the hate and bigotry that lies at the feet of all those who came to Charlottesville under the flags of the neo-nazis, KKK, and other white-supremacist organizations.

At least one of the people who were attacked was killed, a young anti-fascist named Heather Heyers. Whether those hurt were IWW members or not, our solidarity and thoughts are with all of the victims of far right violence. Everyone who went to Charlottesville to stop the fascist threat is a hero. We’re all in this together.

Thank you to everyone who has been doing what they can to stand up to the far right and support one another, in #cville and beyond. Together we can build a mass movement that makes them irrelevant.
